GCP Project
The fundamental unit of organization in Google Cloud - every resource belongs to exactly one Project, which serves as the boundary for billing, IAM permissions, and API enablement. A Project has a permanent, globally unique Project ID chosen at creation and never changeable, distinct from its display name which can be updated freely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does it matter that a GCP Project ID is permanent while the Project name isn't?
The Project ID is used in resource URLs, API calls, and service account emails, so changing it would break every reference to that Project's resources — which is why GCP makes it immutable and globally unique for the lifetime of that ID (even after Project deletion, the ID may be unusable again for a period). The display name, by contrast, is just a human-readable label for the console and can be renamed anytime without affecting anything programmatic.
What's a common mistake teams make when choosing a Project ID at creation time?
Picking an auto-generated or overly generic Project ID (like a random string GCP suggests) makes Projects hard to identify later in billing exports, IAM audit logs, or CLI output where only the ID is shown. Best practice is choosing a deliberate, namespaced ID upfront (e.g. `acmeco-prod-billing`) since it can never be changed afterward — unlike the display name, there's no do-over once resources are created under it.
