Platform Engineer Roadmap: Zero to Job-Ready
Follow this platform engineer roadmap from zero to job-ready: Kubernetes, GitOps, Terraform, observability, then build an Internal Developer Platform.
0 / 30 modules
Your recommended path
Start at Foundations and work every step in order. Each step builds directly on the one before it. Budget 12-18 months of consistent study and hands-on practice.
- Focus on understanding why each tool exists before memorising commands.
- Platform Engineering is rarely a first job. Most people get there after 1-2 years in DevOps, SRE, or backend roles, so aim for one of those first and keep building toward this path.
- You can skip these for now: service mesh, building a developer portal before you have users, and multi-cloud setups.
Your recommended path
Skim the Beginner tier for gaps, then start properly at Container Orchestration and work through the Intermediate and Advanced tiers. Budget 6-9 months from this entry point.
- Platform Engineers need depth in Kubernetes, Terraform, and observability that most DevOps engineers have not built yet.
- Do not skip GitOps. Most internal platforms deliver changes through it.
Your recommended path
Skim the Beginner and Intermediate tiers as a refresher, then focus on the Advanced tier. Budget 3-4 months of focused study.
- Platform Engineering Foundations and Internal Developer Platforms are the skills that separate a Platform Engineer from a DevOps Engineer.
- The biggest shift is mindset: treat the platform as a product, developers as customers, and adoption as your success metric.
Your recommended path
Jump directly to the System Design and Interview Prep capstone, then use the earlier tiers to review weak spots. * Practice explaining real trade-offs, such as build versus buy for a developer portal. * Interviewers test judgment, not tool trivia.
