What You'll Learn

Understanding Why Migrations Fail

A logistics company in Chennai plans a weekend cutover for 40 servers.

Choosing a Migration Strategy with the 7 Rs

Every application in an estate gets a decision, and the decision is rarely "move it unchanged." The 7 Rs name the options.

Discovering and Planning a Migration

You cannot plan what you cannot see. Discovery finds the servers and connections, and planning turns them into waves with a way back.

Rehosting Servers with AWS Application Migration Service

Rehosting is the fastest way to leave a data center: copy the server, not the application.

Migrating Databases with AWS DMS

Servers move by copying disks. Databases need a different approach, because they change constantly while you copy them.

Connecting On-Premises Networks

Migrations and hybrid workloads both depend on a private link between the data center and AWS.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are seven options for what to do with each application: retire, retain, rehost, relocate, repurchase, replatform, and refactor. You pick one per application, not one for the whole company. Most estates use a mix, with rehost and replatform as the common defaults.

Application Migration Service (MGN) copies whole servers, including the operating system and disks, to EC2. Database Migration Service (DMS) copies the data inside a database, and can keep the target in sync while the source stays live. Many migrations use both: MGN for application servers and DMS for databases.

Use a VPN when you need connectivity quickly or have modest bandwidth needs. Use Direct Connect when you need steady high bandwidth and predictable latency, and plan for weeks of provisioning. Many teams use Direct Connect as the primary path and a VPN as the backup.

Not for a single VPC and one VPN. A Transit Gateway becomes worth it when you have several VPCs, or several VPN and Direct Connect connections, that all need to reach each other. It replaces a growing mesh of peering connections with one hub.
