What You'll Learn

Understanding the Problem That Creates Internal Developer Platforms

You are on acme-shop's platform team. By now the cluster has guardrails, cart-service deploys from Git, and traces show where checkout is slow.

Understanding Platform as a Product

The most important idea in platform engineering is a mindset shift: the platform is a product, and developers are its customers.

Understanding Backstage and What It Provides

Backstage is an open-source framework for building a developer portal.

Building the Software Catalog

The software catalog answers "what exists, and who owns it".

Designing Golden Paths

A golden path is a pre-built, supported way to do a common task, so that the right way is also the easy way.

Writing a Software Template

A software template is a YAML file that defines a form (parameters), the actions to run when it is submitted (steps), and what to show afterwards...

Frequently Asked Questions

The platform is the tooling and automation that gives developers self-service: pipelines, clusters, policies, and infrastructure APIs. The portal, such as Backstage, is the front door where developers find and use it. Many teams say 'platform' for both.

No. Backstage is the most widely used open-source portal framework, but it takes real engineering effort to run. Hosted portals and a well-organised repository with templates can be a good start, and the platform ideas in this module apply to any of them.

A golden path is a pre-built, supported way to do a common task, such as creating a new service with CI, deployment, tracing, and cost labels already wired in. Teams can leave it, but it is meant to be the easiest route, not a mandate.

Look at delivery metrics such as lead time and deployment frequency, and at adoption and developer feedback. A platform nobody chooses to use is not working, whatever its feature list says.
